• PROJECT REPORT WRITER

  Position Overview:

  Benthic Solutions Limited is a marine environmental survey and consulting company delivering a broad range of services to the offshore renewable, utility, oil and gas, and aquaculture industries worldwide from the shoreline to full ocean depth.
  We are seeking a talented and experienced Project Report Writer to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal to producing high-quality environmental reports for various marine and coastal projects.
  The position is full time but part time (minimum 22.5 hours) will be considered, with a competitive salary (commensurate with experience/qualifications) and benefits, including profit sharing and health insurance. The position is office-based or with the option to include an element of offshore time (up to 60 days with rotations up to 2 weeks), at the applicant's discretion.

  Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Management: Oversee project deliverables and resource planning, adhering to deadlines set by the Reporting Manager. Key activities include:
  • Leading environmental data interpretation sessions.
  • Developing and monitoring project-specific Gantt charts.
  • Liaising with Marine Scientists, Project Managers, Clients, Subcontractors, the Analytical Manager, and the Reporting Manager.
  • Providing constructive written feedback to report writers.
  • Conducting QA/QC, and issuing deliverables to clients.
  • Supporting the preparation of GIS deliverables using ArcGIS/QGIS.
  • Leadership: Lead development tasks as assigned by the Reporting Manager, ensuring timely and high-quality completion.
  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor assistant report writers to enhance the quality and accuracy of project deliverables.

  Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (BSc) in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an environmental report writer in the survey industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in key reporting areas, including:
  • Intertidal surveys.
  • Coastal and deep-sea marine surveys, encompassing:
  • Desktop Reviews.
  • Habitat Assessments, including biotope mapping and assessments of common potentially sensitive habitats (e.g., geogenic reefs, biogenic reefs, seapen & burrowing megafauna communities, cold water coral gardens, deep sea sponge aggregations).
  • Environmental Baseline Surveys.
  • Environmental monitoring reports (North Sea and internationally) for various stages such as pre- and post-construction, drilling, and decommissioning.

  Skills & Competencies:

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong skills in MS Office and GIS software, including Global Mapper, Surfer, ArcGIS, and QGIS.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Time Management: Exceptional timekeeping and task management abilities, with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and managing multiple projects effectively.

• MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD SCIENTISTS

  You will be involved in all aspects of survey work, including:

  • Participating in surveys from vessels and rigs during standalone environmental surveys or as part of multidisciplinary cruises with durations ranging from one day to several weeks
  • Operating a range of seabed/seawater sampling devices and underwater cameras
  • In-field Interpretation of geophysical and environmental data to support development of survey strategies appropriate for the project and to meet client specifications
  • Acting as the Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) or Protected Species Observer (PSO) implementing relevant mitigation protocols to minimise impacts on marine megafauna
  • Operating Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) equipment according to mitigation protocols to minimise impacts on marine megafauna during night-time hours
  • Conducting intertidal phase 1 biotope surveys
  • Granulometry analysis of sediment samples by sieving and laser particle sizing
  • Interpretation of geophysical/environmental datasets, including statistical analysis
  • Compilation of reports (e.g. Bibliographic Desktop Study, Baseline/Characterisation, Habitat/Biotope Assessment, Pre-/Post-drill, Pre-/Post-decommissioning, Monitoring)
  • Preparation of GIS deliverables using ArcGIS

  Applicants should have a relevant BSc degree and relevant experience from employment/studies.

• MARINE MAMMAL OBSERVER / PASSIVE ACOUSTIC MONITORING OPERATOR

  You will be involved in all aspects of marine megafauna survey and monitoring, including:

  • Participating in surveys from vessels during standalone surveys or multidisciplinary cruises ranging from one day to several weeks, as marine mammal observer (MMO)/protected species observer (PSO)/passive acoustic monitoring operator (PAMO)
  • Preparation and review of MMO, PAM and Marine Megafauna reports
  • Developing in-house procedures for marine mammal mitigation/monitoring
  • Training marine field scientists in marine mammal mitigation/monitoring, including the use of passive acoustic monitoring equipment
  • Providing onshore technical support to field scientists
  • Supporting environmental survey operations during multi-disciplinary surveys

  Applicants should have a relevant BSc degree and >2 years' experience as an MMO/PSO/PAMO.

• PROJECT MANAGER / ASSISTANT PROJECT MANAGER

  You will oversee all aspects of the project lifecycle for a range of small to medium (Assistant Project Manager) or medium to large projects (Project Manager), including:

  • Preparation of technical and commercial tenders
  • Project planning and preparation of project HSEQ documentation
  • Manage project delivery and maintain communication with the client
  • Marketing and business development
  • Attend client meetings and exhibitions/conferences in the UK and overseas

  Applicants should ideally possess a relevant BSc degree and:

  • >3 years' experience in survey industry for Assistant Project Manager
  • >5 years' experience in survey industry (>1 year project management) for Project Manager
• MARINE BENTHIC TAXONOMIST / ASSISTANT BENTHIC TAXONOMIST

  As a Marine Benthic Taxonomist, you will be involved in all aspects of laboratory work, including:

  • Sieve, sort, identify, enumerate marine and estuarine benthic fauna, including all phyla from intertidal regions, shelf seas and deep waters around the UK and globally
  • Efficient and accurate recording of data and preparation of outputs to the reporting team
  • Maintain the standards of an internationally recognised quality control scheme
  • Develop, maintain, store and prepare sample reference collections

  Applicants should have a BSc degree in marine biology (or relevant subject), 1 year experience working in a marine benthic taxonomy laboratory and appreciate the need for efficiency in a commercial laboratory. Graduates who have completed a relevant marine benthic dissertation as part of their studies, involving the sorting and identification of benthic macrofauna samples, will also be considered. Interviewees will be required to demonstrate their skill in accurate and quick identification of macrobenthic taxa, knowledge of taxonomy and enthusiasm for the subject.

• TENDER WRITER

  You will support the Commercial Manager in the delivery of technical and commercial proposals:

  • Responsible for the quality of all aspects of the bid, including written documentation and presentations, often associated with short deadlines
  • Produce documents that are clear and concise requiring attention to detail, consistency and accuracy
  • Co-ordinate design input to ensure the visual standard of all documentation and presentation material
  • Support the commercial department in business meetings, conferences and exhibitions

  Applicants should be educated to degree level and ideally have a minimum of 1 year experience in a tendering/commercial role in the offshore survey industry.

• ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT WRITER / ASSISTANT REPORT WRITER

  You will support the Reporting Manager in the delivery of analytical and reporting requirements, including:

  • Interpretation of geophysical/environmental datasets and use of appropriate univariate and multivariate statistical techniques
  • Compilation of reports to meet client requirements (e.g. Bibliographic Desktop Study, Environmental Baseline/Characterisation, Habitat / Biotope Assessment, Pre-/Post-drill, Pre-/Post-decommissioning, Monitoring)
  • Granulometry analysis of sediment samples by sieving and laser particle sizing
  • Opportunity to conduct intertidal phase 1 biotope surveys

  Applicants should possess a minimum of a relevant BSc degree and ideally 1 year experience as an environmental report writer in the survey industry; graduates with demonstrable aptitude will also be considered (at 'Assistant' level).

• SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT WRITER

  You will support the Reporting Manager in the delivery of analytical and reporting requirements, including:

  • Compilation of reports (e.g. Bibliographic Desktop Study, MMO/PAM, Environmental Baseline/Characterisation, Habitat/Biotope Assessment, Pre-/Post-drill, Pre-/Post-decommissioning, Monitoring)
  • Responsibility for specific projects, liaising with clients/subcontractors and overseeing production of reports to a high standard
  • Interpretation of geophysical/environmental datasets and use of appropriate univariate and multivariate statistical techniques
  • Deliver technical knowhow (nature conservation/environmental legislation, survey design, environmental data interpretation, habitat assessment, statistical analysis, scientific report writing, data presentation, map/figure production, GIS) to support training of report writers
  • Develop analysis/reporting methods and resources to improve quality/efficiency
  • Support preparation of GIS deliverables using ArcGIS

  Applicants should possess a relevant BSc degree and have a minimum of 2 years' experience as an environmental report writer in the survey industry.
